Anthony Harris’ career in the Diplomatic Service which began in 1964 included postings to Lebanon as an Arabic language student; Saudi Arabia (Oriental Secretary); Sudan (Information Officer); the United Arab Emirates as Deputy Head of Mission; Switzerland as a delegate to the UN; and Egypt as Chargé D’Affaires during the first few months of the Gulf crisis of 1990-91. His FCO career concluded with appointments as Head of Information Department where from 1990 to 1994 he was responsible for the British Government’s relations with the foreign press worldwide and the management of the BBC Overseas Service; and lastly to Abu Dhabi in 1994 as HM Ambassador during which time he negotiated the UK-UAE Defence Cooperation Accord. He took early retirement in 1998 to join Robert Fleming International in the City of London as a Director (and Registered Representative) in their Middle East Corporate Finance Department and now is running his own consultancy business based in Dubai. He is a Senior Consultant with Middle East Consultants International in London specializing in political and economic analysis of the Gulf Region.
